“We are all formless energy, dancing in form.” ~Dicken Bettinger
For many years now, I’ve been an advocate for what feels very much like truth to me – the idea that there is ‘nothing to do’ to find peace, joy and happiness. I can see so clearly that it is ingrained in our very essence that we are already everything that we might seek outside of ourselves for. It is the foundation for how I live my life these days – though I can’t say I’ve always seen this. Years ago, I felt lost and broken, stuck in a life I felt mostly uncomfortable in - worried, anxious, depressed and chronically ill. I spent many years searching for a fix in the external – travelling from Stonehenge to Bali learning everything from affirmations to yoga and meditation, in my attempts to find a way out of the suffering I experienced. Until one days, I came across Three Principles that explained just exactly why I didn’t need to do any of that, and it brought a prompt halt to my search, and an instant inner-peace!
Hard to believe, I know, but all it really took was seeing something differently; understanding how our experience of life is thought-created and that beyond that is a wisdom – the natural intelligence of life – living us, in each moment. In this realisation, I actually became rather an avid speaker about how we don’t need self-help because there’s nothing do to – because we aren’t broken. And this, I still find to be truth to this day. You see, now, all I see is that we can embrace self-rediscovery of what is already there, an as we see who we really are – wisdom in action – all we struggle with falls away, layer by layer – insight by insight.
The understanding I point to – which I like to call the Three Principles of Self-Rediscovery - offers a beautiful foundation for life, which helps us to see that we don’t ‘need’ anything outside of ourselves to look a certain way in order to be peaceful or happy. No longer am I ‘anxious’ or ‘depressed’ – or even ‘chronically ill,’ as I see these were just labels which these fell away all by themselves as I stayed more and more in the conversation. It feels a very beautifully grounded space to find myself in, seeing my wholeness for the first time.
Playing in Creative Expression
But what I saw even deeper along that journey, made all of that so much more rich and fun. You see, we can find peace, and we can feel settled, and that’s wonderful. Especially when we feel that peace and wisdom present within us during times of uncertainty, such as at the moment with the pandemic. But it wasn’t until I heard something else that I really began to get soulfully excited. You see, whilst there is ‘nothing to do’ – Dicken Bettinger offered that this is there is nothing to do ‘to be psychologically okay.’ But there’s still plenty we can play in ‘doing’ - if we desire to create!
I’ve talked a lot about how we can find freedom from any suffering with understanding these principles, and deeper listening, but I also now see that we can also dance in life to unravel a life we love, as well! It is no longer simply about finding freedom, but actually playing in our beautiful humanness, from that foundation. You see, we might all be wisdom in action, but we are also blessed with the beautiful gift of being in human bodies - with desire, creativity and playfulness! These Three Principles also offer us the chance to light up and play in the beautiful human experience we have!
The other day, I heard from a wonderful friend, Jacquie Forde, who said ‘every thought is a gift.’ And never before had that seemed truer to me. For when we begin to understand that the power of thought lives us, we can truly see that we are free to unravel our beautiful human experience of life – as Dicken puts it: ‘formless dancing in form’ – however we like. We don’t need to listen to our thinking – it is an illusion – but this doesn’t mean we can’t choose to move in whichever way we are called to dance. And, often, when we deeply listen for wisdom as to which way to move, we find ourselves unravelling more magic - from a space of wisdom - than you could ever even begin to dream up with your little mind!
Co-Creating Between Divine Wisdom and Human Desire
I’d had a sense for this before; I’ve always been creative, but I was listening to the wonderful Dominic Scaffidi (who is on my Self-Rediscovery Summit this week, by the way!) describing this recently, and he explained how we are all living as a co-creation between divine wisdom and human desire. By this he means we are wisdom, beyond all else, but that we can co-create with our humanness to unravel whatever we desire. He also described that ‘a desire for more is a desire for all’ – meaning that human desire is just a way of our soul communicating that it wants to be allowed to be expressed in all its magical capacity. Wisdom wants us to express as all that we are truly capable of.
And yet, there is no attachment. We don’t need to think our way around our creating. We don’t need to worry if what we play with creating doesn’t achieve the ‘desired success’ we imagined with our logical minds, because there’s a wisdom to that, too – and success is just another one of those thought-created labels. How freeing is that to know that we can play and dance in fun, without an agenda? Wisdom unravelling what is meant for us, whilst we play in the glitter and sunshine?
For me, this feels so joyful. Ultimately, it is so grounding – because I’ve come to see that whilst we don’t have to have - or ‘need’ – any specific ‘purpose’ in this life - we don’t ‘need’ to seek for why we are here – we can still embrace the beautiful gift of being here in our human bodies. And we can play in that however we choose to; however we desire to! Unravelling a life we love seems a lot more fun that way, doesn’t it? And since this beautiful insight, so much has unravelled for me – you wouldn’t even believe. And I have no attachment to the outcome, so I’m having fun from the space of a beautiful sense of peace!
So, my question for you is - what will you play in creating from that the settled knowing that all you need is already within you – and that the outcome doesn’t matter? How will you dance as formless in your form? It’s a choice… Enjoy it.
